New Goodyear tires
When it comes to energy, heat is a big waste. Sometimes we can put waste heat to good use, like by redirecting steam from power plants to heat homes. But a lot of other times, heat is just lost. Take, for instance, when your car tires run against the asphalt of the road. Usually, the friction between your tires and the road turns some of the car's energy into heat, which just dissipates into the surrounding air or ground, lost forever.
Engineers at Goodyear recently showcased an energy harvesting solution, a concept tire called the BH-O3. The BH-O3 is a tire with an inner coating that generates energy from the tire, which is then fed back into the car's electrical system. The material, which the promotional video doesn't describe, can generate electricity in two ways, either from the tire being squished against the road as it moves or from the tire heating up. The heat can be generated from anything, from sitting in a hot parking lot or sedately driving down the road, to doing doughnuts. Obviously, the company is eyeing the Texas/Arizona/Dear-God-Can-It-Really-Be-This-Hot market.
There are a few questions that remain unanswered, including how much electricity the tires would actually contribute to the car, and, of course, whether or not the new high-tech tires will make good tire swings? We'll just have to wait and see.

Will Goodyear's new tires make a difference at Rockingham?
A: In an attempt to emphasize driver and team skill this season, Goodyear will bring less-durable tires to most tracks this season. As the tires wear down, the theory goes, teams that know how to make their cars handle properly and drivers who know how to conserve their tires will be able to pass lesser drivers and teams more easily than they have in recent years.
